Project description

A press-release for the 99 W Exhibition:

99 W

Bulart Gallery presents “99 W” – project by Samuil Stoyanov
opening: 20 November 2012 | 6 pm | Varna 22 Shipka st

In his second solo exhibition at the Bulart Gallery in Varna, Самуил Стоянов welcomes us with ideas implemented using various techniques – video, audio-installations, objects, painting… The multiple types of expression will hardly surprise the people, who are already familiar with the methods used by the artist, although here the amplitudes are in remarkable concentration.
We have been long aware that the current political and social issues have permanent presence among his interests. In his new works Samuil is focusing his and his audience’s attention on the environmental theme.
Propaganda and passionate rhetoric are lacking in the exhibition. However, Samuil analyzes the processes and parameters of shaping public attitudes and position on environmental issues. He questions the conventional theses and paradigms.
Science, in the form of calculations and quotations on one hand, and sensitivity in which everyone reacts in their own way, are placed in interaction mode by the author. The main goal is for the viewer to experience each piece in the exhibition, while learning what the carbon dioxide content in atmosphere is, or where 75% of oxygen is being produced.
The figures used and the literal visualization, which may be confusing for the unprepared viewer, are offering a reassessment of new clichés, but they may also bring nostalgic feelings for the one-hundred-watt incandescent bulb, as in the work “99 W”, representing a light box.
Using humor and skepticism about corporate manipulations, the critical view of Самуил Стоянов ultimately aims to create art with a “sustainable” role for adherence to common sense.
